University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh senior Krista Loest has navigated significant personal challenges on her path to graduation. An art education major, Loest is currently student teaching at Carl Traeger Elementary School in Oshkosh. Her journey was interrupted during her sophomore year when her mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia.
Loest, a commuting student from Fond du Lac, balanced caring for her younger brother and supporting her mother at the Ronald McDonald House while maintaining a high GPA. "It was really hard," Loest said, describing how she took on a parental role for her brother while their father worked as a truck driver.
The family faced the challenge together, with Loest's mother undergoing treatment including a successful bone marrow transplant. Now doing well, Loest's mother will join family members at the upcoming commencement ceremony.
Loest credits an inspiring art teacher at UWO-Fond du Lac for encouraging her to pursue art education. She expressed a passion for teaching elementary students various art forms and noted the excitement of her current fourth-grade class working with clay.
UWO professors recognized Loest's dedication despite personal hardships. Assistant Professor Trina May Smith praised Loest’s commitment to her studies and artistic work during difficult times. JaeHan Bae, who supervised Loest during clinical teaching experiences, highlighted her growth and dedication to art education.
Looking ahead, Loest plans to seek teaching positions between Oshkosh and Milwaukee. She values the diverse skills and enthusiasm of students across different school levels and appreciates the support from UWO faculty throughout her college experience.
Reflecting on her time at UWO, Loest cherishes memories made with fellow art students and professors who supported her journey. "What’s better than making cool mugs while laughing with your friends?" she remarked.
