Cristyn Oliver, a prominent cross country and track athlete at Lawrence University, is preparing for a career in sports psychology. Currently in her fifth year at the university, Oliver has been inspired by her own experiences as an athlete to pursue this path.
Hailing from Redondo Beach, California, Oliver is majoring in psychology. Her interest in sports psychology developed significantly after a challenging junior year. "I went through a really hard time where I lost my confidence,” Oliver shared. “I was dropping out of every race. I saw a sports psychologist and have built up a better mentality."
On October 12th, Oliver achieved another milestone by setting the fastest 6,000-meter time in Lawrence University's history during the Gene Davis Invitational at Reid Golf Course. She completed the course in 21:52.6, breaking the previous record set by Val Curtis in 2002.
Oliver's career includes two individual conference titles in cross country and multiple championships in indoor and outdoor track events within the Midwest Conference. As she continues competing during her additional Covid year of eligibility, she plans to attend graduate school with aspirations of working in sports psychology, counseling, and coaching.
Reflecting on her success and struggles, Oliver emphasizes understanding the person beyond athletic achievements. “Know that everyone struggles,” she remarked. “They say you're doing so good, but they don't understand I go through the same problems as everyone else."
Oliver’s journey into running began with youth soccer programs where she enjoyed running more than other aspects of the sport. Her visit to Lawrence University solidified her decision to join its athletic program due to the supportive team culture she encountered.
Looking ahead, Oliver is preparing for upcoming competitions such as the Midwest Conference Cross Country Championships on November 2nd at Reid Golf Course.
