"They were in tears over FaceTime," Yunus said. He and 30 other UWO students were invited to join Tri-Alpha, the only national honors society for first-generation college students. "I wish I could find a proper word or vocabulary to describe how happy they were."

Senior Eli Elder has found a unique path by combining his interests in mathematics and music through the Bachelor of Musical Arts (B.M.A.) degree at Lawrence University. The program, introduced in 2019, allows students to split their studies equally between music and another liberal arts field. Elder, from Highland Park, Illinois, chose mathematics as his secondary focus.
Lawrence University celebrated the accomplishments of students, faculty, and staff at the annual Honors Convocation on Friday afternoon. Johnson, who plans to pursue law school after graduation, is among the youngest members of the 2024 graduating class. Lawrence University is set to honor five retiring faculty members at the 2024 Commencement on June 9. The retirees include psychology professor Beth Haines, anthropology professor Peter Peregrine, and three music faculty in the Conservatory—John Daniel, Matthew Michelic, and Steven Jordheim. These distinguished educators will conclude their tenure at the close of the 2023-24 academic year.
Frances “Frankie” Kerkhof, a recent graduate from Oshkosh, has earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology with minors in social justice and Spanish. Additionally, she received certificates in indigenous studies and Global Scholar. During the commencement ceremony on Saturday, Kerkhof shared her thoughts and experiences.
