Over 1,300 students received their degrees at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s 150th spring commencement ceremony on Saturday. The graduates, who have now joined the ranks of more than 100,000 UW Oshkosh alumni, were supported by family and friends as they received associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.
Among the graduates was Hailey Tanem of Fond du Lac who walked with hundreds of other graduates in Oshkosh to earn her associate degree from UWO Fond du Lac. Tanem plans to continue her education at UW-Madison to earn a Ph.D. in psychology. "Ever since I was young I wanted to help people," said Tanem.
Jarit Thao of Oshkosh, a biomedical science major graduating magna cum laude and an Honors College graduate, plans to work as an emergency medical technician before applying to medical school. Charles Kudy Jr., a West Milwaukee native inspired by his parents' public service careers, earned a master of public administration degree and is currently serving as village administrator in Campbellsport.
The commencement ceremony also featured inspiring speeches from UWO alumnus Jim VandeHei ’95, co-founder and CEO of Axios; Frances “Frankie” Kerkhof, who graduated with a bachelor of arts degree; and Eli Tranel, who graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education.
Kayla Kane of New Berlin graduated with a degree in criminal justice and will start law enforcement academy training at Fox Valley Technical College on June 5. Munha Bhai overcame transportation issues on the day of the ceremony to receive his degree in liberal studies and has plans to attend law school in southern California.
Kyndra Straughter from Chicago graduated with an associate degree and plans to continue her studies in law school to become a criminal defense attorney. Makaylee Stewart celebrated earning her bachelor's degree in psychology with four family members, while Kennedy Osterman, a UW Oshkosh basketball standout, plans to seek a job in the Milwaukee area after graduating with a degree in radio TV film.
