Frances “Frankie” Kerkhof, a recent graduate from Oshkosh, has earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology with minors in social justice and Spanish. Additionally, she received certificates in indigenous studies and Global Scholar. During the commencement ceremony on Saturday, Kerkhof shared her thoughts and experiences.
Kerkhof began her speech by extending a warm welcome to all attendees including friends, faculty, alumni, guests, and the graduating class of 2024. She expressed her excitement at being able to serve as a bridge connecting the end of one stage of life to the beginning of another filled with endless possibilities.
She acknowledged that college is a time for self-discovery and change, as well as finding one's voice and community. The experiences of the graduating class of 2024 were no different. Despite starting their college journey during a global pandemic and having to adapt to an ever-changing environment, they showed remarkable perseverance. They continued their studies, supported each other, and found innovative ways to stay connected.
Reflecting on her own journey at UWO (University of Wisconsin Oshkosh), Kerkhof shared how she felt like there was an invisible barrier between herself and the rest of the world before attending university. However, UWO provided numerous opportunities for her to try new things, meet new people, and find her place in the world.
UWO was not just an educational institution for Kerkhof but also a community where she felt at home. It was a place where she made lifelong connections, discovered her passions, and learned how to transform the world around her. She expressed gratitude towards professors, staff members, and students who accepted her fully for who she is.
Kerkhof concluded by encouraging fellow graduates to think about someone who made their experience at UWO special. She emphasized that this moment of celebration is not just about individual achievements but about collective success. She ended by expressing immense honor in celebrating their achievements and looking forward to a better and brighter future.
