The Lawrence University women's basketball team has exceeded expectations this season, earning a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007. The Vikings, who were initially ranked last in the preseason poll, secured the final berth in the four-team tournament after defeating Ripon College.
Junior forward Maggie Culver commented on their initial ranking: "We were ranked last in the conference in the preseason poll, and I think everyone took that kind of personally." Despite these predictions, Lawrence managed to achieve a 15-10 record, marking their most successful season since 2005-06.
The Vikings will face top-seeded Ripon College again on Friday at Weiske Gymnasium. Reflecting on their journey this season, Coach Riley Woldt stated: "This year, from day one, it's going to be our journey. It's going to be different than anyone else's so let's just make it our own."
Maggie Culver was recognized as Midwest Conference Player of the Week following her performance against Ripon. She scored 18 points and expressed excitement about reaching the tournament: "For us to be in a position to be 20 minutes away from going to the conference tournament, we were going to get there. I think we just wanted it more."
Junior forward Mallory Meyer echoed similar sentiments about their determination: "Saturday was do or die so I felt like we wanted it more than them." Meyer played a crucial role by leading her team with an average of 12.5 points per game and securing victory with two free throws in overtime against Ripon.
Lawrence's path has not been without challenges. Several players suffered season-ending injuries last year but returned strong this season alongside newcomers who contributed significantly. First-year guard Charlotte Brennan has averaged 10.4 points and leads the conference with 3.8 assists per game.
Coach Woldt emphasized his team's resilience: "Our ladies have been working hard all season and stayed present through the highs and lows."
As they prepare for Friday's game against Ripon, Culver remains optimistic: "The hardest part is getting to the tournament. Since we're there, it's anybody's tournament. I honestly think we can win."
Meyer added her perspective on facing Ripon again: "They are going to come out guns-a-blazin'. We have to have confidence in ourselves."
Woldt looks forward to continuing their success beyond just making it into the tournament: "We've done something special ... But it's on to the next."
