Lawrence University students in a songwriting class are working on music for a potential film project. The class, Advanced Collaborative Songwriting, is co-taught by Brian Pertl, dean of the Conservatory of Music, and Cory Chisel, an Appleton-based singer-songwriter. Students are writing songs to be considered for inclusion in a film adaptation of Michael Farris Smith's novel "Salvage This World."
Michael Farris Smith, known for his novels and film adaptations, met with the students to discuss their work. The connection was made through Chisel, who co-wrote the title song for Smith's film "Desperation Road," released by Lionsgate in 2023.
Chisel shared his experience: “I was lucky enough to be invited to set during the filming of Michael’s film Desperation Road, where I was able to present to him my original composition, co-written with the lead actor, Garrett Hedlund.” He added that Smith loved the song and chose it as the title theme.
The students were divided into groups to create songs for Smith's consideration. While there is no certainty that any song will be selected for the movie, Pertl emphasized the value of this experiential learning opportunity: “They will be in the running right along with high-profile songwriters.”
Chisel expressed enthusiasm about providing this opportunity: “Cory is bringing an incredible opportunity to the class as the culminating experience,” Pertl said. Chisel reached out to Smith about involving Lawrence students in this project: “I asked if he would be open to a final assignment I had in mind for our class.”
Smith visited Harper Hall on March 5 to interact with students and offer feedback on their compositions. Students researched extensively before his visit and are now preparing their final submissions.
While production of the film is still months away and outcomes remain uncertain, both instructors encourage readiness for such opportunities. “Brian and I always teach to be ready for this kind of opportunity,” Chisel noted.
