Andrew Graff, a 2009 graduate of Lawrence University, has released his second novel, True North. Although he resides in southwestern Ohio, Graff's connection to Wisconsin's Northwoods and his alma mater remains strong. His latest work follows the success of his debut novel, Raft of Stars, which was published nearly three years ago.
True North is set in the fictional Marigamie County and centers around Sam and Swami Brecht, a family from Chicago who purchase a white-water rafting company in Thunderwater. The story unfolds as they navigate the challenges that come with their new venture. Graff draws on his own experiences as a white-water guide to bring authenticity to the narrative.
Graff explained his choice of setting: “I knew I wanted to keep writing about the north and its people and the rivers and the woods and the black bears and the stars.” He added that he wanted to include white-water rivers due to his passion for them.
The Washington Post describes True North as a “warmhearted story” where “grace finally wash[es] over its characters,” while Publishers Weekly commends Graff for balancing character-driven domestic fiction with adventure.
Graff's first novel received significant attention when it was named an "Indie Next" pick by the American Booksellers Association and highlighted by Parade Magazine and USA TODAY. Reflecting on this success, Graff said, “It still feels really dreamy.”
Since then, Graff has earned tenure at Wittenberg University, where he teaches English. He continues to engage with audiences nationwide through speaking engagements. In March, he will speak at Seattle Pacific University alongside Lawrence English professor David McGlynn.
Graff fondly recalls returning to Lawrence University for a book reading in 2021 at Main Hall: “That was the dreamiest peak of Raft of Stars for me.” This experience underscored the significance of his time at Lawrence in shaping his writing career.
Following True North's release, Graff is participating in various book festivals. His upcoming appearance includes an event at the Wisconsin Book Festival on February 28 at Madison Central Library.
