"Evan Ney Wins LU Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition"

Evan Ney, a fifth-year student at Lawrence University pursuing a Bachelor of Music in saxophone performance and Bachelor of Arts in English, expressed his excitement after winning the annual Lawrence University Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition. Ney presented Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra at Memorial Chapel in late April, delivering a performance accompanied by the university’s Wind Ensemble under the direction of Andrew Mast, where major works by Joseph Bologne and Frank Ticheli were also featured.

Describing Dahl’s concerto as a composition with three distinct and highly evocative movements, Ney highlighted the recitative opening, the lyrical second movement, and the lively third movement. He acknowledged the challenges posed by dramatic stylistic shifts and the final movement’s pace, emphasizing the piece's unique harmonic structure.

Looking ahead, Ney is preparing for a recital as the culmination of his time at Lawrence, scheduled for May 12 in Harper Hall. His project centers on presenting commissioned contemporary music, reflecting his passion for expanding the saxophone repertoire with new compositions.

Ney's journey to explore new musical horizons began early in his academic career, driven by a desire to contribute to the saxophone's evolving repertoire. His commitment to mastering extended techniques and exploring the instrument's expressive capabilities has led him to collaborate with acclaimed composers and fellow students to create innovative saxophone works.

The upcoming recital will feature compositions by renowned saxophonist and composer Daniel Whitworth, microtonal specialist Ethan Isaac, as well as works by talented Lawrence students Jasper Kashou and another student. These pieces showcase a blend of traditional and contemporary elements, highlighting Ney's dedication to promoting the saxophone as a versatile and expressive instrument.
