Three University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students have been honored with community engagement scholarships for their remarkable volunteer work. Rita Nwaogaraku, Zach Zirgibel, and Zoe Simpson were awarded the 2023 UWO Community Engagement Scholarship for their dedication to helping diverse populations in need.
Rita Nwaogaraku, a sophomore nursing major, shared that her passion for volunteering stems from her upbringing. She expressed, “I grew up in a family where helping others was like a norm.” Nwaogaraku's volunteer work included assisting in food pantries, participating in mission trips, and supporting community centers that provide essential services to those in need.
Director of UWO Center for Civic and Community Engagement, Mike Lueder, commended the scholarship recipients, stating, “They have found areas they are passionate about and truly given themselves to supporting that mission.” He further added, “It is my hope more UWO students can learn from these three individuals and follow in their footsteps.”
Zach Zirgibel, a junior biomedical science major, found inspiration during his volunteer work in Honduras, where he interacted with young people in a refeeding center. Zirgibel shared, “Meeting Nadia inspired me to look for ways in my own community in which I could give back and hopefully bring a little laughter and to help others.” He aspires to pursue a career in the medical field after graduation.
Sophomore radiology major Zoe Simpson discovered a new perspective on community engagement through her involvement in a class focused on Migration, Culture, and Human Rights. Simpson dedicated her time to mentoring and tutoring student refugees, gaining insights into their challenges and resilience. She expressed, “I came to appreciate the rich diversity that exists within my local area... I learned about the resilience and determination of these young students, which has been truly inspiring.”
The recipients' commitment to community service has not only enriched the lives of those they have helped but has also equipped them with valuable skills for their future endeavors. Their selfless acts of kindness and dedication to supporting vulnerable populations exemplify the spirit of the UWO Community Engagement Scholarship.
