Lawrence University senior, Charlie Bunch, is set to embark on a new chapter in her academic journey by enrolling in the International Space University in Strasbourg, France. The biochemistry major, hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, has always harbored a fascination with space and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
During her undergraduate studies, Bunch delved into the world of microscopic species that thrive in extreme environments, akin to conditions found on other planets. She expressed her passion for exploring the potential forms of life on other planets, stating, “If we’re going to find life, it’s most likely going to be unicellular.”
Looking ahead to her master’s program in space science and exploration, Bunch expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming academic challenges and the prospect of living in France for the next two years. She shared, “I wanted to make it an adventure. I wanted to do something a little more out there.”
Despite her focus on biochemistry, Bunch is also graduating with a minor in art history, highlighting the interconnectedness of art and science. She emphasized the significance of popular culture in shaping perceptions of space exploration, noting, “If we look to art, we can understand what people want from space.”
As Bunch contemplates her future career path, which could potentially lead her to space as an astronaut, she remains excited about the journey ahead. She expressed her eagerness to engage with like-minded individuals who share her curiosity about the mysteries of the universe, stating, “Mostly I’m excited to be around other people who are asking the same questions as me and asking questions related to those questions.”
