Former Lawrence University President Mark Burstein made a return to campus for the unveiling of his presidential portrait and the dedication of a campus walkway that honors his legacy. The ceremonies, attended by trustees, faculty, alumni, and staff, also honored Burstein's husband, David Calle.

During the unveiling of his portrait, displayed in the Center for Academic Success, Burstein expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am so moved by it being in this space... This idea of student success is a critical value here at Lawrence and it has been a critical value for me."

The walkway spanning Drew Street, rebuilt with contributions from over 30 donors at the end of Burstein's presidency, was dedicated as the Calle Burstein Crossing. President Laurie A. Carter described it as "a visible reminder of their many contributions to Lawrence" and emphasized the role of presidents in moving the university forward, stating, "As presidents, we are stewards of this university’s legacy, and we carry a responsibility to always move Lawrence forward, to prepare it to serve the needs of today’s students and those yet to come."

Reflecting on Burstein's leadership, Board of Trustees Chair Cory Nettles praised his vision, saying, “He had a very clear sense of where Lawrence was and where he wanted to take it.” Former chair of the trustees, David Blowers, commended Burstein's work ethic and strategic focus, noting, “Mark, you got us focused on the right things and positioned us to grow for the future.”

The presidential portrait, a tradition at Lawrence, was created by artist Patrick Earl Hammie and funded by a generous donor. Burstein highlighted the importance of the artwork being a teaching tool and showcasing diversity, stating, “He exceeded the expectations on teachable... He did a beautiful job, an interesting, thoughtful job.”

President Carter thanked Burstein for his contributions to strengthening the university's endowment and supporting strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the student experience. She acknowledged the significance of the Calle Burstein Crossing as a symbol of progress and legacy, saying, “The Calle Burstein Crossing represents forward movement. And that is a wonderful legacy, indeed.”
