On February 29, students at Oshkosh North High School came together to celebrate Black History Month during the third annual assembly organized by the Black Student Union (BSU).

The event, which featured speeches, readings, musical performances, and dance routines, aimed to honor Black culture and history. Opening remarks from BSU representatives Agul T. and Geavanni G. emphasized the importance of Black History Month and the conversations it sparks. Agul T. expressed, “Every year, Black History Month undoubtedly brings questions...Black History Month brings hope and unity."

BSU president Tiara F. choreographed a dance performance that symbolized themes of self-assurance and resilience, followed by the announcement of the winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. essay contest and a powerful spoken word poem titled “Who Am I?” delivered by the BSU president.

Dr. Sam Coleman, Assistant Superintendent of Oshkosh Area School District, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the significance of music in Black history. He encouraged the audience to reflect on the messages conveyed through music and how they influence individuals and communities. Dr. Coleman stated, “We celebrate Black history for the ways that Black people - and all people - have united to make sure that this country is a country that provides the rights to justice, fairness, and opportunities that all of us can experience."

The assembly also featured performances by the Oshkosh North Band, a mash-up dance routine by BSU members, and a soulful vocal performance by sophomore Antonio T. The celebration concluded with a group sway, symbolizing unity and togetherness.

The event served as a reminder of the importance of unity and celebrating diversity. It showcased the efforts of students, staff, and community members in promoting inclusivity and understanding within the Oshkosh Area School District.

In the words of Dr. Coleman, “You are in control of your own destiny...The choice is yours."
