Allison Jenssen's experience with side pain led to a surprising colon cancer diagnosis. Initially, the discomfort subsided, but it returned after she gave birth to twins in 2024. "We were outside playing with the kids, and all of a sudden I felt this intense pain," Jenssen recounted. This prompted a visit to the emergency department where a CT scan revealed a perforation in her colon and a 6cm mass, necessitating immediate surgery.

Her medical background allowed her to understand the gravity of the situation. "I knew enough to know that we were likely looking at a malignancy," she said. The subsequent pathology report confirmed colon cancer.

Despite this diagnosis, there was good news; the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes and surgery appeared successful. Jenssen discussed chemotherapy options with Dr. Amir Bista from ThedaCare Cancer Care. "He was very informative," Jenssen noted about Dr. Bista's approach to treatment.

Dr. Bista emphasized patient-centered care: "I strive to provide patient-centered, personalized care rather than just following a protocol." Jenssen opted for chemotherapy considering her young children.

On December 30, 2024, which was also her birthday, Jenssen completed chemotherapy and celebrated by ringing the Survivorship Bell. "It was really beautiful because it was still decorated for Christmas," she said about that day.

Jenssen now focuses on health awareness for her children who will need early colonoscopies due to her history. Reflecting on dietary habits from her youth, she aims for healthier choices for them.

Jenssen encourages colorectal screenings: “Whatever is holding you back, I’d say look to your family and do it for them.” She hopes to aid others facing similar diagnoses by advocating for counseling services specific to colon cancer patients.

Dr. Bista reiterated the importance of screenings: “Advanced colorectal cancer may present with multiple signs or symptoms... It’s important to do appropriate screenings at the recommended intervals.”
