Dr. Jasmine Wiley, a family medicine physician affiliated with ThedaCare, has been contributing her expertise to the U.S. Ski Team by volunteering as part of their medical team. Dr. Wiley's role involves traveling with elite athletes to various international competitions, including the World Juniors and U23 Cross-Country World Championships in Italy.
Dr. Wiley is experienced in overseeing the health of high-performing athletes. For three seasons, she has accompanied the U.S. Ski and Snowboard (USSS) Cross Country junior development team to countries such as Finland, Slovenia, Austria, and Italy for training camps and competitions. In November, she worked with Olympic-level athletes at the World Cup races in Ruka, Finland.
"Having a physician with the team is very important," Dr. Wiley stated. "We can address any overuse or acute injuries or illnesses that may occur, and we help keep the athletes healthy and in top condition for their competitions and long seasons."
Dr. Wiley's passion for skiing began in her childhood in Clintonville and continued through college where she participated in events like the American Birkebeiner races. She holds a USSS level 200 coaching certification and has coached youth ski groups.
In northeast Wisconsin, Dr. Wiley has served as an assistant and head coach for Bay Nordic Junior cross-country ski team in Green Bay and volunteered as medical director at Ariens Nordic Center in Brillion.
To join the U.S. Ski & Snowboard medical pool, physicians undergo on-snow emergency training after an application process. These physicians volunteer their time during training and competition seasons to support teams across various disciplines within USSS.
"Getting to be a part of the USSS programs and teams...is deeply enjoyable for me," Dr. Wiley said about her involvement with these athletes.
As a family medicine doctor at ThedaCare, Dr. Wiley applies her broad knowledge to address concerns that arise while traveling with cross-country teams.
"As opposed to alpine disciplines where there is a lot higher chance of acute injuries...cross country skiing is an endurance sport," she explained regarding injury management among cross-country skiers.
Her dedication aligns with ThedaCare’s lifeinspired movement which aims at creating healthier futures for all individuals involved including patients and elite athletes alike.
"I just absolutely love skiing," she shared about her personal connection to fitness through skiing—a passion rekindled during intense years of medical school as stress relief.
The supportive culture within U.S Cross Country ski team resonates strongly with Dr.Wiley who hopes it reflects into everyday practice interactions fostering positive environments encouraging people towards their best selves both physically mentally emotionally alike!
