On February 20, 2025, Oshkosh West High School hosted a Black History Gallery Walk organized by the school's Black Student Union (BSU). The event was attended by community members and friends of the Oshkosh Area School District. It featured student speeches, performances, and a gallery walk showcasing influential Black figures throughout history.
The program began with an address from BSU president Micah T., who emphasized the importance of recognizing Black history beyond just one month. "We can uplift Black voices and have meaningful conversations about race and equity," Micah stated. "Let this month serve as a time of reflection, appreciation, and motivation to build a future that honors the legacy of those who came before us."
The evening included original poems by students Tez B. and Miyah T., along with a musical performance of “Deep River” by Aliyah T., accompanied by Adri T. and Steve G. on violin.
Guests toured the gallery walk featuring historical figures such as Booker T. Washington, Sidney Poitier, Bessie Coleman, and Madam C.J. Walker. These individuals were chosen for their groundbreaking achievements and representation of Black excellence.
Micah explained the selection process: "As we decided who we would feature in the gallery walk, we tried to focus on two things; who was the first person to do something - breaking barriers...and who represents Black excellence."
Discussions during the event focused on the societal impact of these figures and addressed historical racial disparities. Students also met with representatives from SEPO Zambia - Oshkosh and CESA 6 to explore community partnerships.
Reflecting on the event's success, Kymani S., an organizer, noted its inclusivity: “This was our first year holding this event...we had informational posters and a virtual gallery walk.” Looking ahead, Micah expressed hope for future dialogues: “I’m a firm believer that we hold the future in our hands...to create spaces where everyone can speak freely.”
The event highlighted both historical achievements and ongoing efforts towards equity within education and broader society.
