The 34th annual Fox Cities Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration is scheduled for January 20 at Lawrence University's Memorial Chapel. The event will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m., featuring a tribute to the legacy of Dr. King with speeches, awards, and musical performances.
Musical acts include NOIR, comprised of Lawrence students, and Preston Parker with The Omọladé Academy. A new addition this year is the inaugural performance by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir.
Two awards will be presented during the celebration: the Jane LaChapelle McCarty MLK Community Leader Award and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Educator Award. These honors recognize individuals or organizations making significant contributions to supporting oppressed voices and educating in the spirit of Dr. King.
Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly will deliver the keynote address. She is a scholar in Black studies and an author whose work focuses on political theory, economy, intellectual history, and sociology related to politics and history.
The event coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January each year.
This celebration is hosted by Lawrence University with support from several local organizations including People of Progression, Appleton Area School District, United Way Fox Cities, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley, City of Appleton, Boldt, and ThedaCare. The MLK Planning Committee organizes it under co-chairs Jesus Smith and Laura Jones.
