Sheldon J. Cooper, a respected professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (UWO), passed away on November 14 after battling ALS since February 2019. He was known for his extensive research on birds and his contributions to the biology department.

Courtney Kurtz and Lisa Dorn, co-chairs of the UW-Oshkosh biology department, reflected on Cooper's impact: “Sheldon joined the Biology faculty in 2001 and served as a professor for the next 22 years. He was co-chair of the department from 2009 – 2023, during which time he guided the department through many challenges and changes." They highlighted his dedication to teaching human and animal physiology, field ornithology, and mentoring students.

Born on October 5, 1967, in Bison, South Dakota, Cooper earned degrees in biology from Northern State University and the University of South Dakota before completing a Ph.D. at Utah State University. His career included positions at St. Lawrence University and UW-Stevens Point before joining UWO as an animal physiologist.

Cooper's research focused on thermoregulation in songbirds, particularly their survival strategies in cold climates. He also engaged with local schools to share his knowledge about birds.

In recognition of his passion for ornithology, a mural was dedicated to him at UWO's Halsey Science Center in 2023.

Cooper is survived by his wife Jaci Seville; sons Payton and Braden; sisters Melissa Cooper and Beth Sutherland; brother Stuart Cooper; and three nephews. A visitation will be held on November 22 at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home in Oshkosh followed by a celebration of life service.

Donations can be made to a scholarship fund established in his honor through the UW Oshkosh Foundation or to the Wisconsin ALS Association.
