Lawrence University junior Joseph Carpenter has been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for his outstanding work in the fields of mathematics and physics. Carpenter, a double major in mathematics and physics, is the latest Lawrence student to receive this esteemed honor, following in the footsteps of past recipients.

Carpenter's achievement comes as a result of his dedication to research and collaboration with his mentor, Doug Martin, associate professor of physics. Together, they have developed a research-grade optical microscope that allows for multi-color fluorescence imaging and various other functions. Carpenter credits his experience working on this project as a crucial factor in his success with the Goldwater Scholarship.

Reflecting on his accomplishment, Carpenter shared, “I had the opportunity to conduct research at Lawrence last summer through the LURF program. My work with Professor Martin on developing an open-source microscope gave me the experience necessary to be competitive for the Goldwater.”

The Goldwater Scholarship Program, known for its support of promising students in the fields of math, natural sciences, and engineering, has recognized Carpenter's potential as a future leader in scientific research. Claire Kervin, assistant professor of English and director of fellowships advising, commended Carpenter's academic achievements and his potential for making significant contributions to the scientific community.

Carpenter expressed his gratitude for the scholarship, emphasizing its importance in supporting his undergraduate studies and connecting him with other scholars. He sees this award as a stepping stone towards his future educational and research endeavors.

Lawrence University takes pride in its students' achievements in the realm of physics and mathematics, with Carpenter's recognition adding to the university's growing list of Goldwater Scholars. Willa Dworschack and Travis Dillon, previous recipients of the scholarship, have paved the way for Carpenter and other aspiring researchers at Lawrence.

Carpenter's success serves as a testament to the university's commitment to fostering academic excellence and research opportunities for its students.
