Jim VandeHei, co-founder and CEO of Axios, is set to deliver the keynote address at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh's Spring Commencement ceremonies on May 18. The distinguished alumnus, who graduated from UWO in 1995, will address graduates at both the 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremonies at the Kolf Sports Center.
Chancellor Andrew Leavitt expressed his excitement for VandeHei's return, stating, “Jim is a remarkable thinker, writer, leader and entrepreneur. His UWO education was an essential element in fueling a career and life that has led to interviews with presidents and the creation of companies redefining how our world receives and consumes news.”
VandeHei, who was honored by UWO in 2011 for his innovative work with POLITICO, has since gone on to launch Axios, a media company that continues to revolutionize the industry. Reflecting on his time at UWO, VandeHei credited his professors for his success, saying, “Take away the UWO professors who took personal interest in developing me, and I would still be delivering pizzas.”
Aside from his entrepreneurial endeavors, VandeHei is also an accomplished author, with his upcoming book "Just the Good Stuff" set to be released this spring. The book reflects on leadership and includes memories of his formative experiences at UWO.
As the co-founder and CEO of Axios, VandeHei has been instrumental in building a media company focused on breaking news and invaluable insights. His Smart Brevity philosophy has not only influenced his writing but also his popular TEDxOshkosh talk in 2021.
VandeHei's success in the media industry has been recognized through various accolades, including being named National Editor of the Year in 2016. With his upcoming keynote address at UWO's Spring Commencement, VandeHei is set to inspire and motivate the next generation of graduates as they embark on their own journeys.
