On March 16, 2024 educators from the Oshkosh Area School District and the Appleton Area School District came together for a friendly basketball competition aimed at supporting educational programs. The event, named Teachers in Sneakers, was organized by the Oshkosh Area School District Education Foundation, the Appleton Area School District, and the Wisconsin Herd.
The game took place at the Oshkosh Arena and saw the Oshkosh teachers emerge victorious with a final score of 93-68, showcasing their skills and teamwork. Despite the competitive nature of the match, both teams displayed sportsmanship and respect throughout the game.
A highlight of the event was the recognition of Oshkosh North business education and leadership teacher, Patrick Griffith, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player. The event also celebrated the collective experience of the educators, with a total of 164 years of service in the field of education represented.
Proceeds from ticket sales and in-game auctions were evenly split between the education foundations of the two districts, further supporting their programs. Additionally, donations from post-game meals at various establishments were contributed to the school systems, emphasizing the community's commitment to education.
The success of the benefit basketball game has paved the way for it to become an annual tradition between the Oshkosh and Appleton school districts, providing a platform for educators to come together, showcase their athletic abilities, and raise funds for educational initiatives. The organizers expressed gratitude to all participants and supporters, looking forward to the continued success of the event in the years to come.
