ThedaCare has issued advice to help individuals enjoy Independence Day festivities safely, minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries. Dr. Jocko Zifferblatt, an Emergency Department Physician at ThedaCare Medical Center-Fond du Lac and ThedaCare Medical Center-New London, emphasized the importance of awareness, planning, and precautions.

“With awareness, planning and precautions in place, you can help avoid a hospital visit and increase the likelihood of enjoying the day with family, friends and no injuries,” Dr. Zifferblatt stated. He advised leaving fireworks to professionals or adhering strictly to safety guidelines if using legal fireworks at home.

According to the Pew Research Center, July 4 and July 5 typically see a spike in emergency department visits, averaging around 45,000 per day compared to 40,700 on a typical summer day. This increase is largely attributed to fireworks-related incidents, heat-related illnesses, water incidents, foodborne illnesses, and alcohol consumption.

“Don’t overlook alcohol as a contributing factor in accidents and injuries,” Dr. Zifferblatt warned. He recommended moderate alcohol consumption to prevent impairment and poor judgment.

Dr. Zifferblatt outlined common risks associated with July 4 activities:

– Fireworks: Attending public shows is safest; otherwise follow instructions carefully.
– Burns: Exercise caution around bonfires and grills.
– Heat safety: Stay hydrated with non-alcoholic drinks and take breaks indoors.
– Boating accidents: Avoid alcohol while operating boats; ensure all passengers wear life jackets.
– Swimming: Swim with companions in familiar areas; avoid alcohol.
– Foodborne illnesses: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold; practice good hygiene when handling food.
– Heart attacks: Stay hydrated safely if diagnosed with heart disease; consult healthcare providers.

He also stressed the importance of sun protection by applying sunscreen frequently and wearing sunglasses or hats.

In case of emergencies during celebrations, Dr. Zifferblatt urged individuals to call 911 or visit the nearest emergency department. ThedaCare hospitals offering emergency care are located in Appleton, Berlin, Fond du Lac, Neenah, New London, Shawano, Waupaca, and Wild Rose.

“Even if you follow all the safety rules,” Dr. Zifferblatt noted,”accidents may still happen. Our teams are here for you in the event of an emergency.”
