One year after opening its doors, ThedaCare Behavioral Health-Waupaca continues to make a significant impact on the community. The facility, which opened in July 2024, has become an essential resource for residents seeking mental and behavioral health care.

Katelyn L., a mother of three from the Waupaca area, shared her experience with the facility. “A lot of trauma built up from a very young age all the way into young adulthood,” she said. “I tried seeking help because I couldn’t deal with it by myself anymore.” She emphasized the convenience of having such services available locally. “Having a health service like this in a small town makes it very convenient, very easy to get to,” Katelyn noted.

Michelle P., another resident who sought help at ThedaCare Behavioral Health-Waupaca after relapsing into alcohol use, expressed gratitude for the facility’s proximity. “If it was not available, I don’t know that I’d be here today,” she said.

ThedaCare Behavioral Health Interim Director Carrie Kubasta explained that people like Katelyn and Michelle are why the facility was established. Located at 710 Park Ave., it serves rural communities including Waupaca, New London, Manawa, Wautoma, Wild Rose, and Weyauwega.

Since its opening until May 2025, more than 5,700 patient visits have been completed. The center has expanded its team by adding a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Substance Use Disorder Counselor while welcoming two new mental health clinicians in June.

“Our Waupaca facility offers a variety of services,” Kubasta stated. These include individual and group mental health therapy, outpatient psychiatric services, medication management, and counseling for substance use disorders.

The building itself is designed to enhance patient experience with features like local artwork intended to support balance and positive energy flow. Kubasta highlighted that community discussions led to the creation of this facility following assessments conducted every three years by ThedaCare hospitals in partnership with other organizations.

“The Community Health Needs Assessment identified the need for additional mental health services,” Kubasta explained. Recommendations included expanding treatment capacity and increasing provider numbers.

To schedule an appointment at ThedaCare Behavioral Health-Waupaca, individuals should begin with their primary care provider who can facilitate referrals as needed.

“Seek the help that you desperately need,” Katelyn advised others facing similar challenges. “In the long run it is worth it.”
