After Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO) distributed its Spring-Summer 2025 newsletter detailing ongoing gun rights initiatives, new developments emerged that were not included in the publication. State Democrats have introduced a significant gun control package, aiming to pass it with minimal public attention.
The proposed legislation includes several bills: SB329, which introduces "extreme risk protection orders" or red-flag laws; SB332, which prohibits undetectable firearms; SB336, which bans private gun sales; and SB330, which reinstates handgun waiting periods in Wisconsin.
At the time of reporting, WGO was the sole organization opposing these bills with the Wisconsin Ethics Commission. The group warns that only 21 states have enacted similar extreme risk protection laws and expresses concern over potential red-flag gun confiscations becoming a reality.
WGO has historically prevented such laws from being enacted in Wisconsin but notes increasing pressure from proponents in Madison. According to WGO, these red-flag laws allow for gun confiscation without due process if someone reports an individual as a threat.
The organization highlights concerns about misuse of these laws and the financial burden of legal defense for affected individuals. They also reference post-9/11 federal "Fusion Centers" as part of broader surveillance concerns related to gun ownership.
