Madison, WI—Senator Rob Hutton and Representative Dave Maxey have reached out to President Trump in a joint effort to address federal ozone pollution standards impacting southeastern Wisconsin. The two legislators are advocating for the reversal of stricter regulations imposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
In 2015, the EPA revised the federal ozone standard, affecting several counties in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, Waukesha, Racine, Sheboygan, and Kenosha. These areas were initially labeled as "marginal" nonattainment but were later reclassified as "moderate" in 2021 and now as "serious." This new classification enforces stricter development regulations that took effect on January 16, 2025.
The reclassification is seen as a threat to job growth and economic development due to new limitations on constructing and expanding facilities. According to Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources' air management director, much of the ozone pollution originates from emissions in neighboring states. A letter from 2023 highlighted that meeting the standards through state-level reductions alone is not feasible.
Representative Maxey expressed concern over the economic impact: “These impossible standards will significantly hinder economic growth in southeastern Wisconsin,” he said. He warned of potential job losses and economic downturns if businesses find it unsustainable to operate under these conditions.
Senator Hutton echoed these concerns: “Stricter federal mandates will further harm southeastern Wisconsin employers, workers and families just trying to get by," he stated. He criticized the rules for not achieving cleaner air objectives while adding challenges to communities already facing difficulties.
Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation backs lifting these restrictions. The letter has been sent to President Trump for consideration.
