Millions of Americans may suffer from sleep apnea, a condition that can impede restful sleep and lead to further health complications if not addressed. "Quality sleep is a critical and often-overlooked component of good health," asserts Dr. Patrick Terry, Family Medicine Physician with ThedaCare Physicians-Oshkosh.

The American Medical Association estimates that approximately 30 million Americans have sleep apnea, but only six million have been diagnosed. Dr. Terry emphasizes the importance of recognizing symptoms and consulting a healthcare professional. "Talk with your primary care provider if you show signs of sleep apnea, or any sleep problem that leaves you fatigued, sleepy and irritable," he notes.

Sleep apnea symptoms include snoring, gasping for air during sleep, daytime sleepiness, dry mouth, headaches, and irritability. The condition lowers oxygen levels during sleep, impacting overall health. "Depleted oxygen levels can negatively impact your body," Dr. Terry warns.

Risk factors for developing sleep apnea include obesity, a family history, alcohol use, smoking, and early-onset dementia. People with certain anatomical factors such as large tonsils or wide necks, as well as older adults and men, are at increased risk.

Dr. Terry recommends discussing potential symptoms with a primary care provider. "If you suspect you have sleep apnea, it’s important to have it checked," he advises, as addressing the condition can improve quality of life. Diagnosis often involves a home sleep study, where sensors monitor various bodily functions overnight. Positive results may lead to treatment involving a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which assists in keeping airways open.

ThedaCare At Home supplies CPAP machines for those diagnosed with sleep apnea. Dr. Terry explains, "The ThedaCare At Home team can help people find the products that best meet their needs."
