When Mike Gesinski joined Lawrence University in 2023 as an associate professor of chemistry, it marked a return to his roots. Originally from the Milwaukee area, Gesinski returned to Wisconsin after spending ten years teaching at Southwestern University in Texas, where he chaired the chemistry department for four years.
Gesinski's expertise lies in organic chemistry, and he emphasizes student mentorship through two independent research projects involving metals titanium and gold. His students gain practical experience in understanding these Lewis acids' roles in organic transformations. The accomplishments of his students are highlighted on the Gesinski Lab website.
Gesinski holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, and a Bachelor of Science from Rice University. He shares insights into his academic journey and interests beyond teaching.
In discussing his approach to education, Gesinski states: "I want all my students to know that I am dedicated to their success, both inside and outside the classroom." He acknowledges that organic chemistry can be daunting but stresses his commitment to supporting students through their academic transitions.
Gesinski finds fulfillment in mentoring undergraduates through original research projects. "It is incredibly exciting to watch students who have never set foot in the lab become proficient and enthusiastic chemists," he says. He values seeing them present confidently at national conferences alongside esteemed chemists.
Reflecting on his career path, Gesinski admits: "Honestly, my entire career has taken me by surprise." He explains that becoming a college professor was not initially part of his plans but appreciates the unexpected opportunities he's encountered along the way.
Outside academia, if not teaching, Gesinski would consider being a baker due to his love for creating new baked goods—a passion paralleling his interest in chemistry experiments.
On campus, Gesinski enjoys spending time in his office located on Steitz Hall's first floor. He appreciates the vibrant community atmosphere with frequent student visits and enjoys bringing his rescue dog Maeby along for company.
Gesinski shares personal recommendations including Marlon James' fantasy novel "Black Leopard, Red Wolf," Sufjan Stevens' song "Shit Talk" from the album Javelin dedicated to Stevens' late partner Evan Robinson; and Wes Anderson's film "The Royal Tenenbaums."
