Caitlin Gallogly contributes vocals to 'Wicked' film adaptation

Lawrence University alumna Caitlin Gallogly, class of 2008, has lent her voice to the film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked." Invited by composer Stephen Schwartz, Gallogly is part of a 16-person chorus providing background vocals for key group numbers such as "Defying Gravity" and "Dancing Through Life."

“You can’t see me in the film, but you can hear me throughout,” Gallogly noted during a Zoom call from Los Angeles. This conversation took place shortly after "Wicked" grossed $164.2 million at the box office on its opening weekend.

The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. It debuted following extensive promotional efforts and has become one of the top movie openings ever. A sequel, "Wicked Part 2," is set for release in 2025.

Gallogly expressed her amazement at the film's reception. “When Stephen asked me to participate, I knew it would be the biggest thing I’ve ever been a part of,” she said.

Her collaboration with Schwartz began years ago on earlier projects, leading to an invitation four years ago to join the film's production. She recorded her parts in New York alongside other singers familiar with the musical.

“Some had done the show before, some had done it on tour,” Gallogly explained. She described the experience as remarkable: “It was pretty incredible.”

Gallogly attended the movie’s premiere at Los Angeles' Dorothy Chandler Pavilion with her husband Sam and other cast members. “The sheer scope of it was unbelievable,” she remarked about the event.

After earning a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota, Gallogly worked in television and film in Los Angeles before moving to New York for theater roles. Her voice-over work includes voicing Princess Kenny on Comedy Central’s South Park.

She remains connected to Lawrence University through various alumni activities and expressed her ongoing passion for her alma mater: “Lawrence is one of my foremost passions in the world.”

Gallogly anticipates that discussions about "Wicked" will continue at future reunions.
