Lawrence University will host renowned tabla player Zakir Hussain in a concert at the Lawrence Memorial Chapel on April 6. The event, starting at 7:30 p.m., is part of the university's annual Performing Arts Series and will feature Sabir Khan and Debopriya Chatterjee as part of the trio Tisra. Tickets are priced between $25 to $30 and can be purchased at the Lawrence Box Office or by calling 920-832-6749.
Hussain, who recently won three Grammy Awards in February, now holds five Grammys in total. He is celebrated globally for his skill as a classical tabla player. "If there is such a thing as a tabla superstar, Zakir Hussain is it," writes the Chicago Tribune.
The current tour includes performances with Sabir Khan on sarangi and Debopriya Chatterjee on bansuri, both recognized for their expertise in traditional Indian music. Hussain was involved in three Grammy-winning projects this year—two collaborations with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia, and another with John McLaughlin in the fusion band Shakti.
Tisra emphasizes Indian folk and classical traditions through its combination of tabla, sarangi, and bansuri (bamboo flute).
