The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh is recognizing National Veterans and Military Families Month by highlighting the contributions and experiences of its student veterans. Among these students is Anastasha Westbrook, a member of the Army National Guard, who is pursuing a degree in biomedical science with a minor in chemistry.

Westbrook utilizes her GI Bill benefits to support her education at UW-Oshkosh. She shared insights into how her military service has shaped her academic journey and career aspirations. "Since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be a veterinarian," she said, emphasizing that college was always part of her plan due to her mother's encouragement.

Reflecting on her motivation for academic success, Westbrook stated, "I’ve always been an honor roll student; I think what motivated me so much was wanting to get into a good college, and eventually to veterinary school."

Westbrook also discussed the advantages of being part of the Honors College at UW-Oshkosh. "I liked the fact that they had smaller classes and more options for classes," she explained.

In her role with the Army National Guard's Echo Company of the 132nd Brigade Support Battalion, Westbrook works as a Tactical Power Generator Specialist. She described balancing military duties with academics as challenging but manageable with understanding professors: "Most professors are understanding and give me accommodations when I have issues finishing the work or just need extra time."

Wearing her uniform brings Westbrook pride and a sense of community service. "When I put on my uniform, I am supporting my community and my country," she noted.

The GI Bill plays a crucial role in Westbrook's educational pursuits. "The GI Bill means a lot to me; it allows me to go to school debt-free," she remarked.

Westbrook also credits the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at UW-Oshkosh for providing essential support during her transition to college life. Now working as a student assistant at the VRC, she helps fellow veterans navigate similar challenges.

For those considering attending UW-Oshkosh, Westbrook offers reassurance about the university's veteran-friendly environment: "UW-Oshkosh has one of the best veteran resource centers that I have seen."
