At the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, a significant portion of the student body is composed of first-generation college students. Nearly 41 percent of these students are paving new paths as they become the first in their families to pursue higher education.

Among them are Maddy Blaser and Gaiab Vang, who serve as communication interns for the federal TRIO programs at UW Oshkosh. Blaser, from Janesville, is pursuing degrees in Human Services Leadership and Art with aspirations to teach art for a non-profit organization. Vang, hailing from Stevens Point, is majoring in public relations and aims to work in PR for a national park.

In celebration of National First-Generation College Celebration Week from November 4-8, both students were involved in activities highlighting their experiences. Maddy Blaser showcased her favorite spots on campus through a video presentation, while Gaiab Vang shared her story through a Q&A session.

Vang expressed her reasons for choosing UW Oshkosh: "I chose to come to UWO to embrace my independence. It was the perfect distance from home (Stevens Point, WI) where it’s far enough to challenge myself to grow and learn how to stand on my own but close enough to know my family’s support was never too far away."

Reflecting on what being a first-generation student means, she said: "For me, being first-gen isn’t about being the first generation in my family to attend college; it’s about honoring the sacrifices and the journey of my parents." Her parents immigrated as refugees after escaping the Vietnam War and worked hard to provide for their family.

Vang's career aspirations involve working in PR or communications for National Parks: "I want to work in PR or communications for National Parks...to explore more parks while raising awareness and encouraging responsible visitation."

Her motivation stems from her family's sacrifices: "My biggest motivation...is my family—especially my parents and grandparents. As immigrants, they worked incredibly hard..."

Being part of UW Oshkosh provides Vang with a sense of community: "Being a UW Oshkosh student means discovering a sense of community where I truly belong..."

She found particular value in the TRIO Student Support Service program: "Though I wasn’t sure about my thoughts on it during my first year...I really appreciate that I stayed committed..."

Vang advises new first-generation students at UW Oshkosh: "I implore you to practice kindness—both towards yourself and towards others."

The university will host several events during First-Generation College Celebration Week including an induction ceremony into Tri-Alpha First-Gen Honors Society.
