Kyle Petit, an assistant professor in the kinesiology department at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (UWO), will be recognized with a 2024 Outstanding Young Alumni Award during the Homecoming weekend later this month. Petit, who hails from Greenville, began his academic journey at UWO, earning an undergraduate degree in athletic training before returning as a faculty member in 2022.
Kim Calver, an assistant professor and clinical coordinator of the graduate Athletic Training program at UWO, expressed enthusiasm about Petit's return. "He made an indelible impression on his peers, the underclassmen he taught and mentored, and everyone who has the opportunity to help him develop into an athletic trainer," Calver said.
Calver highlighted Petit's leadership qualities during his undergraduate years. She noted that she nominated him for the Wisconsin Athletic Trainers’ Association Founding Fathers Scholarship during his sophomore year, which he won. "He presented an undergraduate research project at the state athletic training conference," she added.
Petit continued his education with a Master of Science in Athletic Training from Illinois State University and pursued a doctorate at Michigan State University. Since 2018, he has been involved in research related to sport-related concussions and has authored or contributed to 16 peer-reviewed publications.
Rachel Johnson, chair of the kinesiology department at the University of Mary where Petit previously taught, commended his professionalism. "His dedication to ethical practices and continuous improvement set a high standard for our students," Johnson said.
Robert Sipes, a faculty mentor and colleague at UWO, noted Petit's contributions upon returning to UWO. "In his first year back, Petit led efforts to develop a unified research lab (SPIRL Sport Performance and Injury Research Laboratory) for our department," Sipes stated.
Petit emphasizes critical thinking and real-world application in teaching. He finds fulfillment in seeing students achieve their career goals. "There is no greater accomplishment as a college educator than when a student lands their dream job," Petit said.
Beyond teaching and research, Petit is active in university service and engages with local high school groups to inspire future students. He also participates in selecting national service award winners for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Reflecting on his time at UWO as both student and educator, Petit expressed gratitude for the supportive environment provided by faculty members. "Without hesitation, I can say that the people I interacted with as a student at UWO impacted me the most," he said.
The UW Oshkosh Alumni Association will honor 13 alumni during Homecoming weekend on October 18-19. The event will recognize four Distinguished Alumni Award recipients, two Outstanding Service Awards recipients, and seven Outstanding Young Alumni Award honorees including Petit.
