Scott Barr, an attorney and managing partner of McCarty Law in Appleton, will receive the 2024 UW Oshkosh Distinguished Alumni Award during Homecoming Weekend. Barr graduated from UW Oshkosh (UWO) in 1986 with a degree in criminal justice and later earned his juris doctor degree from Hamline University School of Law.

Since joining McCarty Law in 1990, Barr has managed a full-time law practice while overseeing the firm's operations. He assists business owners and executives with various transactions, including start-ups and mergers. Barr holds an "AV" rating from Martindale-Hubbell, indicating high legal abilities and ethical standards based on peer reviews.

Barr is also active in community service, participating as a board member for several organizations such as the Fox Cities Marathon and Attic Theatre. He has served on the UW Oshkosh Alumni Board, including a term as president, and currently sits on the Foundation Board.

Fellow UWO Foundation Board member Mike Hochholzer praised Barr's integrity and leadership: "He is a person of high integrity, always seeking to do the right thing." Christine Gantner, UW Oshkosh director of advancement, highlighted Barr's loyalty to UWO despite his demanding career. Greg Giles, former executive director of the UWO Foundation, noted Barr's commitment to ensuring the university’s success.

Reflecting on his time at UWO, Barr emphasized the importance of liberal education: “While I didn’t learn to be a lawyer in undergrad...I did learn many of the soft skills necessary to do the job well.” He expressed gratitude for UWO's support for first-generation college students like himself.

Professionally, Barr values the trust his clients place in him for complex business transactions. Outside work, he enjoys spending time with his wife Barbara and engaging in activities such as biking and playing tennis.

The UW Oshkosh Alumni Association will honor 13 alumni during Homecoming weekend on October 18-19. Alongside Barr receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award are three others; two will receive the Alumni Outstanding Service Award; seven will be honored with the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
