Lawrence University senior Safiya Grant, a biology major from Jamaica, impressed judges and audiences alike as she finished in the money at The Pitch, a shark-tank-style competition for college students in northeast Wisconsin. Grant's innovative pitch centered around Muse, an all-natural skin-care line tailored for women of color.

Grant expressed her passion for the industry, stating, "I have always been interested in skin care and the business aspect of the skin care industry." Her entrepreneurial journey began at a young age, crafting her own skincare products and eventually leading her to envision Muse as a business opportunity.

The competition, held on April 24, saw Grant secure third place, earning her a share of the cash and in-kind prizes totaling $50,000. Reflecting on her achievement, Grant highlighted the significance of the opportunity, stating, "It’s always been on par with my goals for myself."

Grant's dedication to her venture was evident as she mentioned, "I’m going to try starting a business, keep on the same track." Her preparation for The Pitch was supported by mentors and the interdisciplinary Innovation & Entrepreneurship program at Lawrence University.

In addition to Grant, junior Nathaniel Smith, a business & entrepreneurship and film studies double major, also showcased his entrepreneurial spirit at The Pitch. Smith's pitch for Thrive in Humility, a Christian apparel brand, earned him recognition in the competition.

Grant's journey into skincare was fueled by her personal experiences, as she recalled, "My skin was always really sensitive... I started making my own skin care products with natural ingredients like cocoa butter." Her passion for biology and interest in aesthetic nursing align well with her upcoming launch of the Muse skin-care line.

Lawrence University continues to foster entrepreneurial talent, with students like Safiya Grant and Nathaniel Smith making their mark in competitions like The Pitch, showcasing their innovative ideas and drive for success.
