Sen. Rob Hutton, a Republican representing Wisconsin’s 5th Senate district since 2023, has publicly criticized Governor Tony Evers and the University of Wisconsin (UW) System Board of Regents over recent developments within the UW System.

On April 7, 2026, Hutton posted: “It’s disappointing that Governor Evers has chosen to shrug his shoulders and sit idly by as his own Regents act against the best interests of the UW System.” He further commented on the responsibility of the Regents in a subsequent post on the same day: “The Regents owe the Wisconsin citizens, employers, and students who rely on a strong, stable UW System an explanation if they choose to throw the System into turmoil.”

Two days later, on April 9, 2026, Hutton addressed actions taken by state lawmakers regarding leadership changes at the university system: “Today the Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges met to get some answers from members of the Board of Regents on the firing of UW System President Jay Rothman. Hutton succeeded Dale Kooyenga in representing Wisconsin’s 5th Senate district after being elected in 2023.
