Melinda (Wulf) Hull, a University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh alumna, recently achieved her dream of becoming a registered nurse after a 12-year journey marked by significant health challenges. Raised in New London, Hull was drawn to nursing as a way to help people and provide stability. She thrived at UW-Oshkosh’s College of Nursing while balancing academics and softball until her health took an unexpected turn.

In late 2011, during her final semester, Hull experienced symptoms that led to a diagnosis of heart failure. At the age of 23, she faced emergency surgeries and received a heart transplant in 2013. Despite these setbacks, her instructors at UW-Oshkosh supported her through hospital visits and resources to help her eventually pass the NCLEX exam.

Hull’s perseverance paid off in February this year when she officially became a registered nurse. Her first day at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah was marked by witnessing an honor walk for an organ donor—a poignant reminder of the gift she received.

Reflecting on her journey, Hull expressed gratitude for the support from UW-Oshkosh staff like Jeanne Hiatt and Sara Nebus who helped guide her back into nursing. “They were incredible,” Hull said about their support during her return to nursing.

Her personal experiences have shaped her approach to patient care. “My journey has made me a deeply empathetic nurse,” she shared. Hull encourages prospective students to consider UW-Oshkosh’s program not just for its quality but for its supportive community: “They truly care.”
